Up until recently, the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. Silence is no longer an alternative.

What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the change in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. It explains how individuals with traits that are advantageous can reproduce faster and longer than those with less favorable traits. The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species transformed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind the most evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the growth in muscle mass due to diet or exercise can't be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not passed on to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific studies, creationists have seized on the idea that evolution is controversial and claim that it shouldn't be taught in school. The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the world in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal, and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.
OECs may be less known however their beliefs are just as intense as the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and they believe that evolution is an untruth.
Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the founders of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their position "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life can't come from non-living matter.
In general, the creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and allow both evolution and creationism to be included in their curricula.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this effort. STR has secured its first victory in eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The next goal is to remove the finch-research of Darwin's famed and also on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear, but could include religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.
The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and an ebook. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences with an orthodox creationist perspective, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.
On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science in major seminaries, too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
